| SLC7A11

Cystine/glutamate transporter is an antiporter that is encoded by the SLC7A11 gene.It is a sodium-independent cystine-glutamate antiporter that is chloride dependent, also known as xCT. SLC7A11 is a member of a heterodimeric Na+-independent anionic amino acid transport system highly specific for cystine and glutamate. This antiporter imports cystine and exports glutamate, which are both amino acids. An antiporter functions with a one-to-one counter-transport, which is when one substance is transported across the membrane at the same time another substance is transported across the membrane in the opposite direction.
